John Walter McCarter

AGE: 81 • Landenberg, PA

John Walter McCarter, age 81, of Landenberg, PA, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on November 15th after a long illness with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late Robert and Alice McCarter. 

John was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean Conflict. Before retiring, he worked in the Engineering Physics Lab with DuPont for 25 years. John was a life member of the Rough and Tumble Historical Association. He was active for many years at the Mt. Cuba Observatory. John was a past champion at Airport Speedway, racing micro midget cars with the Blackbird Club. He enjoyed spending time in his workshop tinkering with small engines and projects. John will be remembered as a gentleman, who was always thinking, solving problems and working on projects.

John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary "Patti" (Dunlap) McCarter; his sons, Glenn McCarter and Scott McCarter (Donna); and his granddaughters, Paula, Laura and Anna McCarter.

A viewing will be held on Friday, November 21, 2014 from 9:30 to 11:30 AM in the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's name to Willow Tree Hospice, 616 E. Cypress St., Kennett Square, PA 19348 or to Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
